School Library Journal
Ryan desperately wants a dog just like his friend Tony's boxer. When his father comes home with a toy poodle, Ryan is disappointed, but names him Brutus and tries to train him as an attack dog. It is Ryan's friend Cassie who really works Brutus to his true potential as a toy poodle. This is a mildly interesting story, even though the outcome is obvious from the beginning. Unfortunately Gondosch ignores her own message in her writing--it is not the size--or length--that matters, but the quality. The simple plot is suitable for children who have outgrown easy readers and are ready for transitional books, but those who tackle this are likely to be bogged down by the repetition and didacticism. Numerous black-and-white pencil sketches add some life to the story and help to break up the text, but not enough. --Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
