About the Author

Matt McMillan qualified as a vet in 2003 and spent 3 years in general practice before undertaking an internship at the Royal Veterinary College. He spent a year working as an emergency vet before starting a residency in anaesthesia at the University of Cambridge, where he stayed for a further 8 years, including 5 years running the clinical anaesthesia service. Matt became a diplomate of the European College of Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2012 and gained RCVS recognised specialist status shortly after. Matt has a special interest in safety and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences on the subject. He has authored several research papers on safety, co-authored the book Errors in Veterinary Anaesthesia and was the chairperson of the working group of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists that developed the Anaesthetic Safety Checklist. Matt currently works as a consultant anaesthetist at The Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre.

Description: This is a 62-page softbound book of small animal anesthesia checklists.
Purpose: The book presents a compilation of checklists designed to promote and support safe anesthetic practices for small animals. By addressing routine procedures and response to potential problems, the book provides a valuable tool fostering safe, successful anesthetic management.
Audience: The book is designed for use by veterinary professionals, including interns and residents, involved in anesthetizing small animal patients and is also useful for veterinary medical and technical students. Experience in private general practice as well as private and academic specialty practice and professional focus on anesthetic safety make the author particularly well-suited to generate a text that meets veterinary professionals' needs.
Features: The book is formatted in an outline style. Content is presented in three sections. Section 1 provides an introduction and instructions on use of the book. Section 2 covers routine pre-anesthetic, anesthetic, and post-anesthetic management of the patient; and Section 3 covers management of crisis situations and other important anesthetic problems (i.e., cardiac arrest and CPR, apnea, anaphylaxis, hemorrhage). For each subtopic, the reader is guided through best practices by numbered and bulleted steps in a checklist presentation with cross-referencing to other pertinent checklists. Ease of access to information is aided by use of color contrasting headings and initial definitions, tabs indicating sections, and a limited index of subtopic checklists. Key words of smaller size than the major subtopic headings are not indexed. Useful summary tables such as diagnostic considerations, CPR drugs, and differentials for problems under anesthesia are presented in Section 3. The book has no illustrations beyond a few figures presented under capnography, pulse oximetry, and hypotension. The book is successfully focused on making important guidance quickly available and easy to read and follow.
Assessment: This book is a very worthwhile tool for anyone involved in anesthesia for small animal patients. It provides pertinent checklists in an easily accessed outline format. It is not meant to be a reference of detailed information and presumes basic competence in anesthetic management on the part of the reader.
