Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Marcella D Ridgway, VMD, MS, DACVIM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This is an introductory guide to basic animal care for individuals wishing to pursue a career working with animals. This softbound publication, which includes information on basic biology as well as characteristics and care of common companion animal species, is fully-illustrated with photographs and diagrams and includes tables and charts summarizing information covered in the text.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to principles of animal care for individuals beginning a career that involves working with animals. Basic theoretical concepts and practical information are presented in a clear, easy-to-read format with abundant diagrams, charts, and photographs that further demonstrate and simplify the text, making it easier for the beginner to assimilate the information.
Audience: This book is written as a basic introductory text for those wishing to pursue a career that involves working with animals. It is suitable for individuals in many areas relating to animal care, including kennel workers, beginning veterinary nursing students, animal rescue facility workers, laboratory animal caretakers, and pet owners.
Features: Chapters on general characteristics and care of common small animal species, animal housing, basic anatomy and physiology, and medical and legal information pertinent to animal care workers are included. Each chapter begins with a listing of the topics to be covered, followed by a succinct, well-organized presentation of each topic. Abundant charts, illustrations, and diagrams effectively summarize and clarify the text material. Useful instruction on practical techniques, such as restraint of various small animal species and administration of medications, is presented. The book ends with a short but helpful index to the text material. Although coverage is sometimes superficial, this is an effective presentation of a broad range of material in succinct, easy-to-assimilate manner.
Assessment: The text is very basic and written at a level appropriate for the beginner. However, even taking into consideration the many color illustrations, the cost of this publication seems more than warranted for soft-bound introductory text which includes minimal specific or technical material and includes information widely available in other publications. The advantage of this manual is that it brings this pertinent information together in one basic, easy-to-use text with effective use of illustrations to clarify key points.
