Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
Bud and Gabby are two cats who live together. Bud is "the bossy one," always claiming the comfy chair. They have their daily routines and "always stick together." Then Gabby gets sick and gets taken off to the vet. Bud, worried, overgrooms, frets, and remembers Gabby's finer qualities (such as loving bugs and not being afraid of anything). He is so upset he does not even want to go outside and besides, he "can't open the door without her." Gabby returns, smelling "kind of like a medicine chest" but looking great, with a healthy appetite. "From now on," decides Bud, "we share the comfy chair." This is a simple story but somehow satisfying. It could work as a conversational point for children who are facing separation from someone they love, but it also is just plain pleasant to read. The full-color painted illustrations capture the cats' expressions excellently. Their faces are expressive but not anthropomorphic (well, a little, but not in a cutesy way).
Kirkus Reviews
Bud is a huge orange cat; Gabby is a small black-and-white one. Bud knows he's the bossy one. Although they spend most of their time reading, watching bugs and napping together, Bud sometimes finds Gabby annoying. Then Gabby gets sick. Bud knows it's serious when the box comes out. Gabby is taken to the vet, and Bud doesn't know what to do with himself. He over-grooms and gets a hairball. He thinks of her constantly, enumerating her good qualities, until she returns. She smells like medicine, but he's happy things are back to normal. Greeting-card artist Davis's first foray into picture books is a sweet, silly story of two slightly anthropomorphized cats. The art, like that of her line of cards, is bold of color and expressive without being too cartoonish. Children who have cats will recognize their pets, and children who have sick siblings or who are afraid of visiting the doctor themselves might have some of their fears allayed after listening to this friendly story. (Picture book. 2-6)

    My kids giggled and giggled

This was a great fun book. My kids (age 3 3/4) giggled over the two cats. We have 2 cats at home so it was a perfect story for them. Since we were given the book as a gift, I didn't know how it ended, so when Gabby got sick, I worried I may be facing a bigger explanation to my kids than I was ready for at bedtime, but happily Gabby comes home and all's well.
