Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
When people hear that dreaded word budgeting, they often think of what they really want but cannot have, like those fancy heels or that shiny new car. In this young adult reader, part of the "USA Today Teen Wise Guides" series, Donovan looks at budgeting as the solution rather than the deterrent to getting not only items of necessity but also items on the wish list. From the short term goal of purchasing those jeans to the long term goal of getting new wheels or a college degree, this book is full of advice detailing how to pay for the must's and still have money for the wants'. The book does not provide some quick, magic solution but rather it offers simple and practical tips that can have a great impact on one's financial habits. Budgeting examples are given and they show teens how to chart their incoming finances and outgoing expenses. Some simple financial advice is offered to explain simple and compound interest in everyday terms; to discuss the benefits of checks; and to warn about the potential hazards of debit cards. This nonfiction book is not a lecture about saving money, but rather researched and authoritative advice about how to spend money wisely, which should make it a much more appealing read for its targeted audience.
