PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "Schoen is clearly in his element and there's a pleasant preposterousness to the whole thing, like a series of good-natured tall tales..." For years, Lawrence M. Schoen has been producing stories about the ever more popular Amazing Conroy and his companion, a buffalito named Reggie. Here we present a collection of those stories, including a new novella, "Barry's Tale," which adds to the adventures of the hypnotist-turned-business-owner as he and Reggie travel the known universe, as well as beyond Human Space. Buffalitos are alien creatures that look like miniature bison and can consume anything. Their only waste product is oxygen. Which makes for limitless possibilities.

Editorial Reviews

BuzzyMag.com - Elektra Hammond
Schoen has a deft way with words, blending intricate descriptions with out-of-this world humor. He creates interesting worlds and cultures, complete with amazing cuisines. He takes you on a virtual roller-coaster ride with this collection, where each story leaves you wanting more. Conroy will solve mysteries, play games of chance, meet alien races, and eat the rarest food in the known worlds.
PW - Publishers Weekly
Starting with 2001s Buffalo Dogs, this collection reprints all seven of Schoens short stories featuring the Amazing Conroy, a hypnotist turned entrepreneur, and his pet buffalito, Reggie, along with the all-new Barrys Tale. The emphasis is on sly humor and social chicanery as Conroy uses hypnotism, subterfuge, and old-fashioned people skills to interact with a universe teeming with oddball aliens and their oft-confusing customs.

Meet the Author

Lawrence holds a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, was a college professor for 10 years, and currently works as the director of research and analytics for a mental health & addiction services medical center. He's one of the world's foremost authorities on the Klingon language. He also runs Paper Golem, a speculative fiction small press. And in 2013, inspired by his protagonist, he became certified as a hypnotherapist.

His fiction draws on his professional expertise, and it's no surprise to find themes of language, memory, and cognition throughout his work. There's a generally light and humorous tone to most of his fiction, and his style has frequently been described as harkening back to a simpler time in SF. In 2007 he was a finalist for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer, and in 2010 he was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Short Story. In 2013, "Barry's Tale" (included in this collection) was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novella. In 2014 he received his second Nebula nomination, for another Amazing Conroy novella.
