Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "We the People" series continues with a title that explores the part that Black soldiers played in settling the West after the end of the Civil War. The all-black regiments came to be known as Buffalo Soldiers. Using historic photos and illustrations of the period, the author gives a clear picture of life on the prairies for these young soldiers. The westward expansion put settlers and Native Americans at odds with each other and the military was sent to keep the peace. The Buffalo Soldier was instrumental in the settling of the West. All-black regiments continued their service to our country in the Spanish-American War, World War I and II, and the Korean War until all Army units were integrated. This could be used in Western history studies or black history studies. The book contains a glossary, an index, a timeline, a bibliography of books on the topic, and the identification code for more information on the www.facthound.com website. 2005, Compass Point Books, Ages 10 to 14.
