Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Since its 1997 small-screen debut, the cult movie turned hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been hailed for its cutting-edge no pun intended attack. Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Since its 1997 small-screen debut, the cult movie turned hit television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been hailed for its cutting-edge no pun intended attack. In 1999, the show spawned the alt-rock-heavy Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Album, but for the series' second soundtrack, Buffy creator Joss Whedon scaled new heights of boob tube ingenuity by transforming Once More, with Feeling, the sixth season's musical episode he wrote and composed, into an original-cast recording. Bufffy Sarah Michelle Gellar, her vamp love interest Spike James Marsters, her witchy best friend Willow Alyson Hannigan, and the rest of the gang flex their surprisingly crisp chops on a campy set of solo and ensemble numbers. On the existential, new wave-ish "Something to Sing About," Buffy laments being awakened from an eternal, heavenly slumber by her clueless Sunnydale clique, who raised her from the dead, and Spike bemoans his lonely immortality. Other highlights include Spike's rockin' solo "Rest in Peace" and the zoot-suited demon Sweet played by Broadway vet Hinton Battle serenading Dawn, Buff's baby sis, on "What You Feel." The disc also includes score segments from three other episodes, plus a demo track from this episode sung by Whedon and Kai Cole. The package features a cover illustration by comic book artist Adam Hughes X-Men, Wonder Woman and liner notes from Whedon. On the Rocky Horror-esque "I've Got a Theory," the cast, including Buffy's "Watcher" Giles, bumbling cutie Xander, his demon lover Anya, and Willow's girlfriend Tara sum up the show's basic theme of friendship: "What can't we do if we get in it/We'll work it through within a minute/We'll have to try.../It's do or die." With this set of cheeky, killer songs, Once More, with Feeling shows why Buffy continues to slay her competition.
All Music Guide - Melinda Hill
The soundtrack of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's first ever musical episode, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More With Feeling, is every bit as fun as the episode itself. It manages to do a couple of things most musicals don't do: give a reason for all the bursting into song a demon named Sweet has put a curse on the town that makes everyone sing and move the plot forward characters reveal thoughts and feelings they had been hiding, with mixed results. The range of musical styles is also quite impressive, ranging from ballads "Under Your Spell", to Billy Idol-esque rock "Rest in Peace", to a clever retro-pastiche "I'll Never Tell". The cast pulls off the fairly demanding vocals nicely. Standouts are Amber Benson on "Under Your Spell," James Marsters on "Rest in Peace," and, not surprisingly, the sublime Anthony Stewart Head on "Standing." Benson and Head's duet on the "Under Your Spell/Standing Reprise" is an especially affecting moment. The album is rounded out by, among other things, the suite from "Hush, one of the most acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes. This soundtrack is, of course, a must-have for Buffy fans, but it wouldn't be out of place in anyone's collection. It's great music done, for the most part, with tongue firmly in cheek.

    Once More With A Feeling!

I really like this CD, my daughter and I like to sing along to it, they are very catchy tunes! Joss did a wonderful job on this episode of BTVS when he created it, and everyone sounds great! I wish Allison Hannigan sang a little more on it though, she sounds better than she thinks!

    Best BTVS CD Ever!

This is it! The ultimate BTVS CD. You get to HEAR your favorite charcters sing! All of them are talented singers as well. But I gotta say Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Benson, Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters blew me away! James Marsters rocks as a singer. I totally agree that he can act, sing, write and direct. Plus he is hot...

    A MUST BUY!!!!!

Joss Whedon has never stopped amazing me with his wonderful show. The writing is absolutely superb and always keeps you wanting more. I was so excited when I heard that there was going to be a musical episode. "Once More With Feeling" is one of the best Buffy episodes ever. If I had to watch on episode over and over, this would be the one i'd choose. The songs are great and catchy and all the actors have great voices. I could listen to James Marsters(Spike) all day. Of course, it goes without saying, that Anthony S Head is extremely talented. You should buy this CD. You don't need to be a die hard Buffy fan to enjoy all the songs. Of course, if you watch they show you'd understand better what they were singing about. If I could, i would give this CD higher than 5 stars.

    Once More, With Feeling

This was an awesome idea! When I first saw the episode, I thought it was hilarious! Then I listened to the songs themselves, and it was surprisingly good! It's set a trend, as numerous other series have started doing musical episodes, too. The best song on here, of course, is "Let Me Rest in Peace," James Marsters. He's hot, can sing, and has that killer accent! 2 thumbs up!

A Terrific Soundtrack to a Terrific Episode!

This is a great soundtrack to an absolutely wonderful episode of one of my favorite shows. Now, I can carefully listen to what the characters are singing and pick up the nuances that I missed on television.

A Hundred Times More With Feeling Please!

The freakish difference to anything else out at the moment is what makes this so fantastic. The opening track is a cool blend of a pop vibe abd a Broadway musical feel and is a perfectly reflection of what is to come on the album. All the tracks are classics especially the smoking hot and death by coolness that is What You Feel, Sweet (the demon) is "cool" on legs and Michelle Trachtenberg plays the mixed up teenager wonderfully. Also my personal favourite, Rest in Peace needs a mention, this song is absolutely fantastic I have never heard anything so thought provoking before it is so refreshing in its ability to break away from the music industry's conveyor belt of loved up songs or hopeless broken hearted weepys. This track is so different because Spike is telling Buffy to leave him be, even though he's in love with her, he still wants his self respect intact and I find it so easier to relate to this. There are only two words fitting for the whole album : Pure Genius.

    Sing It!

I would give this more then five stars if I could. The Buffy cast really out did themselves in "Once More, With Feeling"! I'm so glad they made that musical episode into a soundtrack. It's one of those soundtracks that you can listen to over and over again.
