A new Fray for Buffy fans

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight is a continuation, in comic book form, of the story from Joss Whedon's television series that ran from 1997 to 2003. The comic series began in March 2007 and is published monthly. Every five issues, the comic books are gathered into a trade paperback. "Time of Your Life" is the fourth such collection, comprising numbers 16 through 20 of the comic book series (40 issues are planned).

Season Eight has allowed Whedon not only to continue the story of Buffy's main characters, but to create longer or shorter cameos for other characters in the Buffyverse. "Time of Your Life" features a twist on the theme by sending Buffy two centuries into the future where she encounters Melaka Fray, a slayer featured in Whedon's first foray into comic books, 2003's eight-part series "Fray". That series was drawn by Karl Moline, who returns to draw the main four-part arc in "Time of Your Life."

The encounter between the two slayers is satisfying, as Buffy tries to adapt to Fray's world and absorb its implications for her work as events move quickly to a crisis. Less satisfying is the subplot that features Xander and Dawn back at Slayer Central in Scotland, where an unnecessary attack by the bad guys is met by the thoroughly arbitrary appearance of a mystical force to fight on the slayers' side. Where magic is concerned, as a character earlier in Season Eight reminded us, the only rule is that there are no rules. But in narrative there are rules, and mystical-forest-creatures-ex-machina must break six of them.

In the Whedonverse, though, there is one rule that endures: there must be emotional pain. It is here that "Time of Your Life" strikes deeper than anything we have seen in Season Eight. The Buffy-Fray narrative moves quickly to a climactic twist that amounts to a punch in the gut for Buffy fans. It's not the rip-your heart-out conclusion of the second season of the TV series, but it's close. We-and Buffy-are suddenly confronted with the (ultimate?) fate of one of her original companions, and it is deeply, deeply sad.

"Time of Your Life" also includes a one-part story written by Jeph Loeb and drawn in an amusing mix of styles by Georges Jeanty in which a dreaming Buffy returns briefly to her high school days.

I dock "Time of Your Life" a star for the silliness of the Dawn-Xander plotline, but it earns that back for beating us up emotionally in true Whedon style. And now that Joss has shown what he's willing to do halfway through Season Eight, I shudder in anticipation of what awaits Buffy and her fans as the story continues.

    DARK WILLOW

Yay Dark Willows back. I love Willow in the series. Alyson Hannigan was perfect to play her. I love Dark Willow too. I hated the ending to this book. Sadness. They should make a Willow series, HA HA!!!

    Talk about cliffhanger

I absolutly love this collection. This volume had me smiling and laughing with the whedonisque writing I have grow to know and love, but Whendon and crew bring in another trademark of theirs as well, they bring in the pain.
All in all get ready for some major face time with Buffy and the scoobs and some gone but defeniently not forgotten faces.
The book will leave you with a thirst for more because of the bombs and loose ends they drop. Also it will put your veiw of the future isn't set in stone to the test. Heres hoping it's true(pretty easy to tell what I veiw for this situation.)

    Definitely a favorite!

Despite the last three volumes having different writers they've all held deliciously true to the Buffy-verse while not letting the storyline becoming dull or repetitive. With this addition the story moves the focus back to Buffy and to the large story arc, Buffy vs the mysterious Twilight. Except it moves at this plot from a side arc rather than straight forward.
It cannot be coincidence that a temporal anomaly sucks Buffy into the future right when Twilight has been trying to convince her of the futility of her spell to make all the Potentials into genuine Slayers. Whoever Twilight is, they are fighting to kill Buffy, to destroy the spell so the balance between good and evil will be restored.
So whether the anomaly and Buffy being present is due to Twilight's interference or not, Buffy landing in a future words where a Slayer is at war with her twin, who has been turned into a vampire, seems only to reinforce Twilight's attacks on Buffy's resolve.
But the main player in this tale doesn't appear to be either the strange, lonely Slayer, her vampire twin with the Slayer's memory, or Twilight. Instead the direct story behind Buffy's time trip is sadder and closer to home than Buffy could guess.
While ultimately a sad volume, so much is left undone, unexplained, unseen or heard that it takes from the depth of the final scene. Readers can only hope that the Buffy-verse continues its habit of baiting, teasing and most of all, delivering.

    Ummm......what just happened?

I was loving this series and the last trade (Vol. 3) was my favorite. So, my expectations for this were high. Sadly, they were dashed quickly. This tale of time travel and forest creatures fell so short is was depressing. The future slayer story line was hard to follow (so much so that I wondered if I was missing pages), the dialogue was confusing, and the art was atrocious. The reveal of who Buffy met in NYC was lost on me because the art wasn't clear as to who it was. So disappointing. This entire story seems pointless and Dawn being a Centaur is beyond annoying. Big step down. :(
