Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Bugs are fascinating and there is great variety because there are more bugs than any other type of animal in the world. Bugs can be helpful and harmful to people, animals, and plants. Bug is a broad term and not all bugs are insects. For example, spiders are not insects. I did not realize that tarantulas had enemies, but the tarantula hawk wasp uses the tarantula that it has immobilized as an incubator and food for its offspring. Gruesome but true. On the other hand the wolf spider's diet consists of insects that can destroy plants, and they do not harm people even though they do look pretty fierce. Bugs can hunt for their food in a variety of environments—underwater, in the air, on the ground. There does not seem to be any place where bugs and people are not found. After all the delicious gory facts, there are even three tattoos for kids to use to put some of these ugly bugs on their bodies. An "All Aboard Science Reader" that will have great boy appeal and really has some interesting facts and clear illustrations. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
