Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker
Young entomologists learn from the inside out about the vast number of insects that plague our world. For every one human, there are three hundred insects that walk, fly, and crawl. The bot fly can lay eggs on humans through the assistance of mosquitoes flying from person to person and landing on the eggs, signaling through body heat to hatch and burrow into the skin creating a nasty boil. Other creepy facts afflict this book including the contest for the ugliest insects such as the Goliath or Bombardier beetles pictured on pages 16 and 17. Although the book gives the illusion of being a simple picture book, each topic becomes denser, using long and complex sentences to provide accurate and descriptive information that encourages the reader to discover more about insects on their own. The dynamic photographs with colorful captions allow for a brief break from the daunting text. Generally in science books vocabulary words are boldfaced and defined in the regular text and then redefined in the glossary. The "Bizarre Science" series does not distinguish these words, so readers do not know when a word is defined in the glossary. Reviewer: Julia Beiker
