Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
With brilliant color photographs and a swarm of interesting facts, this alphabet book is sure to grab readers' attention. There are one to two bugs for each letter of the alphabet, each accompanied by a short description. Some entries are broad terms like ant, caterpillar, and spider—while others are more specific, the xerces blue butterfly (extinct since the 1940's) for example, or the red imported fire ant. In addition to basic information on various creepy-crawlies—such as the difference between insects and spiders and how crickets chirp, readers will also find more unusual facts—like dung beetles eating poop and butterflies tasting food with their feet. Plenty of white space surrounds close up photographs of the bugs, allowing for careful observance of details. A short glossary provides definitions to unfamiliar words, and a thorough index will help readers find their favorite entries. This is a perfect book for budding entomologists and new readers.
