Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Bugs are everywhere. They come in all shapes and sizes. They come in all different colors. But have you ever really studied about bugs to find out more about them? Here, children will find out some very interesting information and cool facts about bugs. For example, mantids, such as a praying mantid, can hunt for prey bigger than themselves. They like to hunt birds or lizards. Can you imagine seeing a praying mantid attacking a lizard? Most readers will know that bugs grow from eggs, which hatch and turn into grubs or larvae. But did you know that the larva from a Hercules beetle can reach up to six inches long! That is the size of a small earthworm. Some bugs can disguise themselves so that they can look like whatever they are sitting on, such as a flower, tree, or plant. But a fun fact is that katydids hide so well that their mate cannot find them. So the females sing their song so they can be found by the males. This educational book includes other fascinating facts and information about bees, butterflies, beetles, snails, and spiders that children will be intrigued while reading. There is a glossary in the back to help with unfamiliar terms in the book. There is also a section for parents and teachers to aid them while reading information in the book. This book is part of the series "Zoom! The Invisible World of...." Reviewer: Cathi I. White
