Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
As the title implies, this is a do-it-yourself book. As Enz's introduction explains, "Want to launch a homemade rocket into the air? How would you like to build your own mousetrap car?" With straightforward instructions and photos showing almost every step, these are projects that kids could do themselves. This book shows them how to make a helicopter launcher, a foam flyer, garbage bag box kite, mousetrap car, paddle wheel boat, formula one race car, and water blaster rocket. Many of the materials are things that many people would have around the house, or could be easily purchased: for example the mousetrap car requires a mousetrap, rubber bands, heavy string, eyehook screws, large washers, and wooden dowels. I would need to buy some of those, but not everything. These projects do require adult supervision for use of a glue gun, but are fairly straight forward in their assembly. All of these projects could emphasize basics in friction and aerodynamics. However the book does not explain these lessons, but simply tells how to build good stuff. Backmatter includes lists of more resources. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen

Meet the Author

Tammy Enz became a civil engineer because of her awe of the massive steel bridges that spanned the Mississippi River. She just had to figure out how they worked. Today, she still likes tinkering and figuring out how things work. When she isn't tinkering, she fixes up old houses and conducts experiments in her garden and kitchen. Most of all, she loves reading books about anything and everything and asking 'why?'
