Mr. Rainardi's book is highly recommended. It's not a survey of DW methods. It's a soup-to-nuts discourse on building one of the DW variations using a real-life project. It's in-depth, but dense reading.

As promised by the Author , this book helps you to build a Data Warehouse in SQL Server 2005, from scratch. Various important topics like Data Extraction ,Data Modeling and Data Quality are explained well in a very lucid language, backed by a good case study. By providing solutions to various potential problems during data extraction , the author touches upon the practical aspect of building a data warehouse. Topics on Data Warehouse architecture and Data Extraction are covered in depth. By introducing the topic of Rational Unified Processes, the author tries to explain how to build a Data Warehouse using multiple iterations. This is a welcome sign. I found the chapter on building reports using SQL SERVER 2005 Reporting Services very helpful. A more of an hands on book, with a sufficient therotical explanation, I felt ecstatic reading the book. I would definetely recommend this book , for any person who plans to attain knowledge or build a Data Ware house using SQL SERVER 2005.

This book was obviously written by a 'doer' and not just from an educators perspective. I find it great for acquiring new knowledge as well as an excellent resource for reference. I could see individuals using this book as a tutorial for acquiring 'soup to nuts' data warehouse knowledge.
