Description: The author of this book uses a logical, step-by-step approach to teach medical terminology. However, the organization allows individual instructors to organize the sequence of the body systems chapters to their own liking. A CD-ROM is included for additional learning experiences, and an instructor's guide is available from the publisher. This book was first published in 1983 and has been updated about every 4 to 5 years since then.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach medical terminology. In addition, the book serves to introduce anatomy and physiology concepts.
Audience: The audience includes anyone interested in learning medial terminology. The book can he used in classrooms with teachers leading the discussion or could be used independently by individuals who have some knowledge of medial terminology but want to strengthen their skills through an organized study guide. The author is a recognized medical terminology author.
Features: The first four chapters provide the foundation for learning medical terminology. Nine chapters address individual body systems. There is one chapter for a comprehensive review. The front cover contains a useful discussion on the pronunciation of medical terms and how to use the pronunciation guide in the book. Pronunciation is often an area of difficulty for individuals beginning to use medical terms. Two good introductions are included in the front of the book — one for students and one for instructors so the readers can use the book to their advantage. The enclosed CD-ROM is not emphasized in the preface and possibly could be overlooked or underutilized.
Assessment: This book has many nice features that together make it a first-rate medical terminology manual. There are four chapters that lay the foundation for medical terminology, flexibility in the use of the nine body systems' chapters, end-of-chapter reviews with a variety of question formats, Spanish translations of many terms, pharmacological terms and abbreviations at the end of most chapters, many colorful illustrations, and several appendixes, including a glossary. The author provides a book that will promote active participation and interaction between teachers and students. If you teach medical terminology, consider this book for your next semester.
