Simple text and photographs present the construction of a road, including information on the workers and equipment needed.
Children's Literature - Carrie Hane HungOrange safety cones mark the site of ongoing construction and in this case the building of a road. Beginning with the city planners' and engineers' designs for the road, readers learn about the process of the asphalt pavement construction. Throughout the book, the brief, written text for early readers is supported by the full-page, color photographs at different stages of the road's development. In the snapshots, the road-building equipment is featured at each stage of the construction except for the painting of the traffic lane lines and the installation of traffic signals and signs. Although there are just a couple of sentences on each layout, early readers may need the support for the content vocabulary. Younger readers with guidance may begin to learn how to use informational text and its features. There is a glossary of eight terms that are used in the text; most of the words are also part of the index. For further research on the topic, the FactHound internet site and book ID number are provided. Additional books are listed for further reading on construction. This book is one of the six in the "Construction Zone" set. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
