Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Barbara L Giacomelli, PharmD., MBA (McKesson Provider Technologies)
Description: The key topics in pharmacy informatics are covered in this important book for pharmacy students and pharmacists.
Purpose: The purpose is to meet the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education requirements for teaching pharmacy students about informatics. Informatics is a key function of pharmacy today and development of this topic in pharmacy schools and among working pharmacists is lacking. This book provides a foundation for that education.
Audience: It is written primarily at the level of a pharmacy student, but it can also educate practicing pharmacists.
Features: Computer systems and dispensing automation are prevalent in healthcare. Having a solid understanding of informatics' role in medication management is essential for pharmacists today. This book covers the key topics related to pharmacy informatics and ensures a basic understanding.
Assessment: This is the first comprehensive pharmacy informatics book I've reviewed. The topics it covers are important to pharmacy informatics and for ensuring that computer software and automation support health system pharmacies. The book even covers areas not fully in place (accountable care organizations or ACOs), making it cutting edge.
