Meet the Author


Ken Carrig is an executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Sysco Corporation and the author of HR for the 21st Century and HR in Alignment & the Link to Business Results, an educational DVD. He lives in The Woodlands, Texas. Patrick M. Wright is a professor of human resource studies and the director of the Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University. He has published over 40 research articles in journals such as Academy of Management Journal and Strategic Management Journal and is the author of Human Resource Management: Gaining Competitive Advantage and Management of Organizations. He lives in Ithaca, New York.

Spot On, July 8, 2009 By Michael Gooch "Author of Wingtips with Spurs:... (Texas, USA) - See all my reviews Published three years ago, the current HR models in most companies do not adhere to the main principle outlined in this tome. That is, that your most direct path to value and profit is through people. This is not an inspirational tome but rather a down-to-earth practical guide for teaching and /or reminding corporate leaders of the need to build people strategies into the business plan. An interesting model detailed in the book is titled the 5 Star Management Model which entails steps that I found very similar to total quality management, SMIP, quality circles, quality improvement, etc. (call it what you will). These steps are: 1. Strategic planning 2. Goal Setting 3. Access the current state 4. Interpret and prioritize 5. Implement improvement The charts and graphs employed are helpful in order to prove the point and also to give the would be implementer a rough outline of the starting place. I believe the book could have benefited from better editing from the publisher (SHRM). This is typically not the author's fault. As SHRM is really not in the big time business of publishing, I can even forgive this. Still yet, I read several blurbs that noted its well structured attribute and I have to disagree. The subtraction of one star is for the publisher - not the authors. It is important to note that all the royalties for this book go to "Share our Strength" an organization dedicated to fighting hunger. I applaud the authors for this generous (and rare) act of kindness. I hope you find this review helpful. Michael L. Gooch, SPHR
