Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shelly McCoy
This nonfiction, graphic novel format book takes middle readers from the beginnings of locomotives through the influences that initiated the need for a railroad to connect the east and west sides of the country, to the delays that befell construction, and finally to the last golden spike being driven to join the Central Pacific and Union Pacific rail lines in the first transcontinental railroad. Part of the "Graphic History" series, this novel, like the others in the series, is a perfect way for readers who are reluctant to read large encyclopedias and other nonfiction works to get interested in the topic, learn the basics, and also find related topics. For instance, the reader may decide to further investigate the related topics of steam engines, Native Americans and westward expansion, or the Civil War. A timeline, glossary, map, index, and quick-use table of contents supplement the main text, and a websites link, which goes back to ABDO Publishing's Book Links page, is provided for some additional, although non-cumulative information.
