    Great mix of information

This book covers a lot of ground; from an overview of the process to how to find land, designing your house, working with architects, financing the whole dream and finally the nuts and bolts of buildng a house. Obviously it is hard to get into great depth on all these subjects, however the book does a good job of capturing the important details that are unique to building your own place, which is a dream I have had for a long time. I have renovated a number of houses that I have bought and lived in, but I have never stepped up to building something from scratch. One of the things that I most like about this book is the detail and information about the financial side of building your own house. This has been one of my biggest stumbling blocks of moving forward on my own project. The financing on a house that you are going to build is much less straightforward than simply buying an existing house. This book is one of the most indepth and educational on all the aspects of being able to navigate the financial complexities of building your own house. Now I am motivated to find a great piece of land and create something from scratch. Overall a great book!

Fantastic book with unique take on custom homes

I loved this book! The authors give much more detail than is typical about the nuts and bolts of financing a custom home project. And I also love the fact that they didn't assume I'd be doing all the work myself or acting as my own general contractor - a mistake most of the other experts in this area make. I work for a living, and these guys get that!
