Editorial Reviews

VOYA
If a school system is ready to change the environment of their schools by confronting the problem of bullying, this book is the instruction manual that they should use. Through accessible language and practical ideas, the authors weave research with tested programs that empower the school community to create a respectful environment that would not support peer abuse. Chapter Five talks about how and why girls and boys bully differently, a timely discussion that exposes both behavior problems as unkind and even cruel. Chapter Eight presents strategies for parents, suggesting a structured way to help parents empower the young person to handle the problem on his or her own. But there are also steps for parents to take if the problem escalates. Chapter Nine provides willing faculty with tools to create and maintain a safe and nourishing environment in which young people can learn without fear of harassment. But the administration must actively lead the campaign. With such thoroughness in the book's approach to handling this social problem, however, the omission of information on cyberbullying is a major flaw. Not until each school system gives this problem the priority it demands will the inspiration of this book be reality, and the chapter, "Strategies for Schools" will become a national focus. Standing against bullying is a lonely mission taken on by a courageous minority, Fried and Fried among them. 2003, M. Evans and Company, 326p.; Index. Source Notes. Appendix., Ages adult professional.
