The Bully is about Darrell Mercer and his experience with the school bully Tyray.Darrell's mother gets a job from her brother that offers her more money. The job requires her and her son to move from Philadelphiato California leaving all there friends behind.Darrell is know attending Bluford High which is were Tyray goes and he is making Drrells life at school misrable.Tyray is making Darrell pay him ten dollars every Friday so that he won't beat him up.Darrell finally gets sick of paying Tyray his mother's money so he joins the wrestling team to grow stronger and more confident.I loved the book The Bully and I recommend that everyone should read this book because it has a good moral.

Paul Langan is a great writer he brings a lot of feeling and emotion into his writing. His characters are easy to relate to real life because there are people that get bullied every day like Darnell. After Darrell Mercer and his mother move from Philadelphia to California in the middle of the school year, the ninth-grader quickly becomes a target for the freshman class bully, Tyray and his friends; Tyray forces Darnell to pay him every Friday 10 bucks and if he didn't get his money he threatened to hurt Darnell. It wasn't like it was when Darnell was back home in Philadelphia because his friends used to always fight his battles now he's alone and don't know what to do. Everywhere Darnell went Tyray followed just to bully him. Darnell was also trying to help his little cousin from getting bullied by his older brother; basically the book is about growing trust and confidence. Once you start reading this book it would be hard to stop its one of the best books I ever read.

I teach reading to 9th-12th grade high school students who are scoring at least 1 grade level lower than they they attend. It is very difficult to get them to pick up a book in the first place, let alone get them to actually finish a single book. They are unhappy to be in my class in the first place because they are embarrassed to be below level. All of my classes are currently devouring this series! They get so into the stories that they can't put the books down. When one student is looking for a book to read, the others start to recommend different Bluford books to them! Not only do they want to read these books, but they actually remember what they read and have their own little sidebar book talks about them! What a great investment!!

Darrell Mercer has to move to California because his mom got a new job. He now has a new high sckool called Bluford High. Darrell makes a friend in the first few days he's there. Her name is Amberlynn and she's nice and Darrell likes her right away. But along with this new firend he makes a new enemy. His name is Tyray and he's already picking on Darrell. Every Friday Darrell must give Tyray his mothers money or Tyray will bully him even more than before. After a few weeks Darrell is getting angry and has had enough of Tyray. His teacher Mr. Mitchell sees what is happening and gives Darrell the book Hatchet. Darrell at first is frustrated and thinks "How is a book going to help me?". But then Darrell starts to read it and learns the main character is not so different then him. Darrell is inspiered and joins the wrestling team to become stronger and not feel so weak and powerless. Darrell has more incedints with Tyray, but one day in the cafeteria, everyting changes. Darrell stands up for himself and Tyray gets mad. Tyray charges Darrell , but he's ready. Darrell ueses his favorite wrestling move on Tyray. Tyray is lifted off the ground and yells "Put me down!". So, Darrell does what hes told and Tyray falls down and breaks his wrist. Tyray is susspended for three days and if Darrell does it agian he is susspended. I thought this book was ok.

“The Bully” by Paul Langan is a very inspiring story of a boy named Darrell Mercer and the problems he faces with the school bully. The theme of this book was very edgy and attention grabbing, just like most of the books from the Bluford Series. The setting first takes place in Philadelphia as Darrell and his buddy are taking their last walk together. Darrell informs him his buddy that his mom was offered another job by his uncle and they would be moving to California. However, when they arrived in California Darrell’s life was flipped upside down and everything changed for the worse. Before his first day of school he met a girl named Amberlynn who he was very attracted to and would later build a relationship with. As the new kid at Bluford Darrell was an easy target for the school bully, Tyray. Tyray tortured Darrell daily and made him pay ten dollars every Friday. The verbal, physical and mental abuse was becoming too much for Darrell to handle. Darrell joined the wrestling team in hopes to learn some self-defense moves so he wouldn’t have to put up with it any longer. Time passed the bullying continued until one Friday Darrell couldn’t do it any longer. He skipped straight past the market where he was supposed to meet Tyray and went to school. Tyray finally caught up with Darrell in the cafeteria and confronted him and Darrell refused to pay. A fight between the two boys broke and resulted with Tyray getting his wrist broken. This book was a great read that many teens can relate to. It doesn’t too often lose your attention and is actually quite entertaining. I like this novel because so many kids can relate to being bullied. I feel the book could be an inspiration for some people and boost them to stand up for themselves and not tolerate any abuse. I can honestly say I don’t have any dislikes. The writer’s style was very vivid and realistic as if he is just another teenager of everyday life. The ultimate conclusion was Darrell stood up for himself and defeated the bully to end all the trouble he had been receiving.

The Bully is a realistic fiction book written by Paul Langan that captures the torment an African American teenage boy experiences after moving from Philadelphia to California. This book has multiple themes such as bullying experiences, high school, moving, and friendship. It is also apart of a series called The Bluford High series. Darrell Mercer did not want to leave his hometown in Philadelphia where all of his friends were in the beginning of his freshman year in high school. But when his Uncle Jason offers his mother a job with better pay that could give them a better life, his mother has no choice. His first encounters in California are just what he's afraid. He meets the boy that will torment him for most of the book, Tyray Hobbs. Tyray forces Darrell to give him the $10 his momma gives him for lunch, pushes him around, humiliates him, threatens to hurt him, and even pulls a knife on Darrell on the street. After reading a book called Hatchet that his English teacher gives him, Darrell builds up enough courage to join the wrestling team and talk to a nice, pretty girl in two of his classes, Amberlynn. For the most part I liked this book for the way it covered his entire life and how everything that happened built up to the end, but it was very slow at first and not very thrilling. The author's style of writing is very dramatic and emotion-filled. Overall the book was okay but definitely not in my top ten list of favorite books and I would not want to read it again.
