Overview

Bully!

One of America’s most beloved presidents comes to life in this comprehensive, unique biography illustrated by more than 250 period cartoons.

Theodore Roosevelt, adored for everything from his much-caricatured teeth and glasses to his almost childlike exuberance and boundless energy, as well as his astounding achievements, captivated Americans of his day—and the cartoonists who immortalized him in their drawings. In Bully! The Life and Times of Theodore Roosevelt, author and cartoonist Rick Marschall tells Roosevelt’s story, using words and colorful images alike. Incorporating hundreds of vintage illustrations, Bully! captures Roosevelt’s remarkable life and incredible accomplishments as no other biography has.

In Bully! you will read and see why this man continues to capture the imaginations of Americans and those who love America. You will learn:

  • Why World War I might never have happened if Roosevelt had won the presidency for a third term
  • How TR the Rough Rider inspired his men How Roosevelt drove the building of the Panama Canal through almost insuperable obstacles
  • Why his strong (but today underreported) Christian faith directed his every action
  • Why “the cowboy” Roosevelt was the most intellectual president America has ever had
  • Why his foreign policy of speaking softly and carrying a big stick was so successful
  • How the “Progressive” Roosevelt was actually a “Conservative”

Editorial Reviews

With his mustache, spectacles, and signature walrus grin, Theodore Roosevelt was a natural subject for cartoonists. They portrayed him wielding giant clubs against trusts, sternly lecturing coal mine bosses, and enforcing the Monroe Doctrine while dressed in wilderness gear. In Bully!, cartoon historian Rick Marschall presides over a gathering of political artwork that is certain make contemporary editorial cartoonist envious. Bully, indeed.

From the Publisher

Praise for Bully!

Bully! is a picture album like no other: a treasure trove of political cartoons celebrating our national love affair with Theodore Roosevelt—a gigantic figure from the past, beloved and admired by the American people, then and now.”
—Daniel Ruddy, author of Theodore Roosevelt’s History of the United States

“Theodore Roosevelt was the darling of the caricaturists and cartoonists of the golden age of that art form, as this book so well illustrates. These artists’ descendants today long for another Theodore Roosevelt—and they aren’t the only ones.”
—Tweed Roosevelt, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, and great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt

“If anyone needs proof that cartoons provide the most fun food for thought for the American political system—open up Rick Marschall’s Bully! and start feasting. Great cartoons, forgotten masters of cartooning, brilliant discussion of issues, and a colorful American hero. Bully, indeed.”
—Bob Mankoff, Cartoon Editor, The New Yorker

Anyone that is a fan of Theodore Roosevelt will thoroughly enjoy this book.It is full of political cartoons of Teddy's life. Sadly, we bought it as a gift for a friend's birthday and did not have enough time to read it all, but we did enjoy many of the cartoons. We will be getting an additional copy to enjoy at our leisure. By the way, our friend was thrilled with his gift!
