Obsessive Restoration (bathtubs)

If the existing vintage tub is in good shape, by all means keep it. Often all tubs need is cleaning. One that is too far gone (because of too many years of abrasive scrubbing or the addition of non-slip decals, which eat into the finish) can be refinished. This is basically paint, so it won't hold up like porcelain. Refinishing is also good for changing the color of an otherwise perfectly good tub. (Maybe it's a really hideous color from the 1950s: the worst color tub I ever saw was one I would describe as "yellowish peasoup green. "On the other hand, you could actually run with that, because it's kind of an Arts and Crafts color, and make it into a really earth-tone Arts and Crafts bathroom. More on this under "Decor".) BOth national franchises and local companies offer this service. Antique white is best for white fixtures, and colors can also be custom-mixed to match colored fixtures or to change colors.
