Bun's Birthday

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-- Through simple first-person text and colorful illustrations, Bun's Birthday dramatizes the universal excitement, pleasures, and minor setbacks of a third birthday. Bun, an elephant, gets up early, awakens his parents, and eagerly opens his presents. Children then follow him through his party, until it's time for his guests to leave. The brief text, completely void of interesting vocabulary or stylistic sophistication, reads like a dull basal reader and fails to provide a stimulating aural experience when read aloud. Paterson's illustrations, on the other hand, are extraordinary double-page torn-paper collages of bold, simple shapes in primary hues set against brilliant backgrounds. The pages are filled with the familiar colors, shapes, and objects of a child's world, and should provide children with the gratification of instant recognition.-- Pamela Miller Ness, The Fenn School, Concord, Mass.
