Overview

Between the alien Alliance and the Terran Empire, a neutral zone stretches between the galaxies, a demilitarized zone that was established 150 years previous, following the Great War. The peace accord granted a semblance of peace to the universe. The peace, however, is a facade, and it is the responsibility of Michael Vance and his covert operations team to maintain that illusion.

Recently, the Alliance lost contact with one of their outposts near the neutral zone. Surveillance scans show an abandoned city and no signs of life. The Alliance does what it always does: send in the best. But an unexpected betrayal leaves Vance and his team stranded. Worse, the city that was supposed to be dead is quite alive. And the monsters that now roam its streets are slaughtering his team, one at a time.

Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite In ┬┐Burden of Sisyph

Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite

In “Burden of Sisyphus”, Book 1 of 'Brink of Distinction series', 150 years of ongoing war takes place between the Alliance and the Terran Empire of Earth, who wishes to expand their power across the galaxy through military force. The Alliance, made up from different alien races such as Avalon, Lithid, Oterian, Uligart, Wyndgaart and Pilgrim, a Terran race that separate themselves from the Empire, vow to stop their enemy at all cost. Unfortunately, Alliance is about to be betrayed by one of its own senior members.

As far as the action goes, this novel hits the ground running. First chapter presents us with the Alliance covert team's attack on a Terran base. Human is the least interesting species in this story, as the Alliance members are of different races of aliens. I was absolutely enthralled with the Wyndgaarts’ initiation ritual with their Voice. Jon Messenger has written a story that is set in a familiar ground but still excels in its originality. I found no flaw in its tight plot. I consider myself lucky to have read the first book of the series, as I would feel left behind if I started reading from Book 2 or 3. Though there ia a large cast of characters, each one in put his or her own rightful place. They are all well-developed and have so much room to grow. Book 2 and 3 of the series are already available, and I can’t wait to read more about my favorite character, Keryn Riddell.

Sloppy story telling, moderately passable story line.
    Failed miserably in character survive-ability.
The writer should re-read the story of sisyphus.
If you are a fan of George R Martins ability to kill of characters from some masochistic fantasy of killing characters for no good reason, than this is the book for you.
If on the other hand you enjoy a good book with characters that are built over time and filled out in a good story line, move on.
I am no a fan of writers putting characters into unbelievable odds just for the sake of killing characters. This book falls into that category.
I was able to muddle through book one but lost interest when the writer start whole sale killing of his main characters. Placing characters
in situations that are fantastically unbelievable at best even for a fiction book.If you are looking for a good read look elsewhere.

Action packed sci-fi. The author does a good job of pulling you in. Looking forward to fallowing the characters on their journies. Well done

    Interesting world building

I was prepared for a long slog but was pleasantly surprised to enjoy this story. This contains mostly military action and survival but the world development made it interesting. Character development was very good.

    Compelling and full of action

The politics of this book are a little hard to understand but the characters are interesting and there is enough action to satisfy even the most action movie addict. We have humans on both sides of this one so you can decide who you want to "back" in this fight between two big alliances.
