Burlesque Book wins 2005 IPPY Award

I just heard this book, 'BURLESQUE: Legendary Stars of the Stage,' won the 2005 IPPY Award in the Performing Arts catagory. From what I've read, over 2200 books were submitted by over 1500 Independent Publishers...and this book was judged to be the best in its catagory. That's all I need to know; it tells me this is a good book--perhaps considered a collectible due to all the photos it contains. The book also preserves at least a small piece of burlesque history; written by someone who has gotten to know many of these old-time performers in their later years. It's a book worth owning!

    Thanks For The Memories

This book is a treasure chest of memorabilia and nostaglia. As a former member of the elite burlesque performers, I read it with great interest. Jane Briggeman, who never saw a burlesque show herself, has captured the 'behind the scene' feeling with sensitivity and delicacy. Her collection of photos and 'insider' information will tickle the fancy of all fans of the good old days of real burlesque. As our numbers diminish, it's heartening to know that someone is keeping the memories alive.More of Jane Briggeman's collection (with a chapter of me included), will soon appear in her next book. Geri Tamburello--formerly 'Sequin'

    Burlesque History at it's Finest

Slipping behind the scene, author Jane Briggeman, who is also the founder of the 'Burlesque Historical Society', draws the reader into the dressing rooms and personal lifes of the woman and men of burlesque. Peppered throughout the book are beautiful photographs that show lots of curves, georgeous gowns and costums that bring the art of dance into the readers mind. Jane Briggeman covers all the ground from men performing baggy pants comedy to the burlesque stars and big production shows. The author writes about burlesque's high popularity as well as its low period threatened by repressive times. Her vast collection of burlesque memorabilia would be a welcome addition to any writers research library. Ms. Briggeman puts heart and soul into 'Burlesque'. The sheer size of the book and the attractive high gloss red cover makes this a very classy coffee table conversation piece. I can't wait to show it to all my friends. Go out now, buy the book, pour yourself a bubbly and settle in for some exciting fun 'read'.

The Good Old Days of Burlesque

Excellent book!! Great stories told by the ladies 'who were there'. Good selection of unusual vintage photos. A window to the past when dancers were still ladies, even while 'disrobed'. The days when a show had orchestras, comics, singers, and professional lighting. This book would make a great gift for anyone who wants to visit (or re-visit) 'the good old days'.

    A step back in time

I thoroghly enjoyed this book. Not only did the author give me a clear picture of what burlesque was like in the early 1900s but she was able to relate to me (in a way that is not easy ) the personalities of the stars. I was entertained and found myself getting misty eyed. So touching to see the stars so young and beautiful and then read of their passing. I just loved this book. 'Jen'
