Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Although numerous books are available on the history of burlesque performance, this book is the only available overview of burlesque poster art, from its 19th-century beginnings to the present-day neoburlesque revival. Although well written and nicely designed, the book contains little information about its writers and compilers, El-Droubie and Parliament, who were previously involved in the production of Kustom Graphics: Hot Rods, Burlesque, and Rock 'n' Roll, also published by Korero. Unlike the women in the pictures, the writing is not lacking in coverage, encompassing a brief history of burlesque in Europe and the United States, as well as a discussion of poster production during different phases of the genre. The book's main section features full-page color reproductions of posters grouped according to various themes, such as venue, artist, and geographic region. Most notably, the book covers poster art for burlesque venues and shows currently in operation, including the Hubba Hubba Revue in San Francisco, Boston-based Black Cat Burlesque, and the London Burlesque Festival. VERDICT Recommended for burlesque enthusiasts old and young, this might also appeal to fans of Vargas girls and silk-screen poster art.—Eric Linderman, Euclid P.L., OH
