With only five of them against hundreds of armed soldiers, escape seems like a suicide mission. Ellie must summon all of her courage and guerrilla instincts to survive the latest high-stakes installment of the action-packed Tomorrow series.

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT - Claire Rosser
First published in Australia, this suspenseful series was reviewed extensively in KLIATT when released in the US in hardcover editions and also as audiobooks. Now, the volumes are available as trade paperbacks, and this is the chance for all YA libraries to get copies. The basic plot of the series is that a group of high school friends in Australia are away on a camping trip when their country is attacked and terrorized by an unnamed enemy. They become an insurgency group, doing whatever they can do to make things difficult for the occupying forces. Their parents and families have been placed in concentration camps, demoralized. The teenagers, making use of their intimate knowledge of their own hometown, stage raids and then retreat to the outback to regroup. The narrator is Ellie, who is filled with rage sometimes and remorse at other times. She is a realist, knowing that they have to do what they are doing if they expect to get their homeland back. All kinds of moral issues are raised. Also compelling are their feelings about each another. This represents the best of YA literature—exciting, honest, gripping. (Look for the final two books in the series to be released shortly—there are seven in all.)

Meet the Author

John Marsden accidentally put himself through the perfect training to become a novelist.

He read vast numbers of books, acquired a love of language, and became insatiably curious about other people. He also had a variety of jobs, 32 at the last count, including working in abattoirs, hospitals, morgues and a haunted house.

In 1985, rather to his own surprise, he found himself teaching English in the Australian bush, at Timbertop School. Noticing a complete lack of interest in reading among his Year 9 students he tried his hand at writing a short novel that he thought they might enjoy.

The rest is history. John Marsden, author of the Tomorrow series and Ellie Chronicles, is now the world's most successful author of teenage fiction. He has sold a million and a half books worldwide, and has won awards in Europe, America and Australia. His first love however is still teaching, and he spends most of his time running writing camps at his property, near Hanging Rock, Victoria.

Burning for revenge is a great action packed thriller. Burning for revenge is the fifth book in the tomorrow series. The tomorrow series is about 8 teenagers who go camping in the Australian bush. While they are gone their entire country is taken over. They return home to find their homes ransacked and the entire countryside on fire. They have to use wit and cunning to get out of many dangerous situations. In burning for revenge the New Zealand army has enlisted the help of the teenagers to try to destroy the Wirrawee airport but it is too much for one of the teenagers who then has a mental breakdown. The war has a devastating impact on all the teenagers. They have to see their own country burned. Their own parents turned into slaves. Their own houses inhabited by the enemy. The author of this book gave me a new perspective of life and just what it means to have freedom.

I loved this book! The title goes along with the book, and the suspense is exhilarating! Anyone how has followed the Tomorrow series (Tomorrow, When the War Began, The Dead of Night, A Killing Frost, and Darkness Be My Friend) is bound to enjoy this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone 13 and older, or a mature audience. The story is about teenagers, so I'm not sure if adults will relate as well.

This book was the most enthralling of the entire 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' series. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, just waiting to find out what new dangers Ellie and her friends would encounter next! I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next!
