This is a very short story, only 43 pages, but it is a very compelling read. There's really not much that can be said without spoiling it. It's definitely worth the little bit of time it will take to read it.

One word: Wow. Ok... one more word: Brilliant. Seriously. History and legend were seamlessly blended together to produce a very masterful short story. I highly recommend it.

This story was well written and interesting, but was quite depressing. It was filled with tragedy without any redeeming message of hope to balance out the bad. There was not just one misfortune...this short story had everything from pillaging Cossacks and mobs destroying jewish ghettos to dead babies and tragic fires packed into it's 42 pages. Save yourself the misery and skip this one!

Not very gruesome, but very very good. Wonderful language, very evocative.

This is the best confrabrication (is this a word?) of fact and science fiction. Best short story and best new author I have read in a long time.

The author had my attention quickly and maintained it until an end that came too soon. This book made me realize that I had a low expectation of "free books", and I see now that they can be an introduction to excellent writers who warrant being sought after for more than just a taste. Excellent storytelling.

This story was an interesting mix of old world cultures mixed with the new. There was both history and legend to make a very different story.

I had fun with this one, my complaints are....it ended too quickly I felt it only touched the surface and did not go deep enough.

Dark and moody. Sometimes you need to go down the dark road. Very emotional and presenting a picture of lives and their circumstances.

Wow! Author Veronica Schanoes blends fairy tale, early twentieth-century history, and Jewish folklore, and makes it work. The hard-headed heroine who believes in the supernatural world, is a wonderful character. The pseudo-explanation of the title early on in the story falls flat, and some of the imagery seems forced. But the story still works because, like fairy tale, it is about a deep human longing. I wish it had not been spoiled for me by reviewers who gave away the main plot points and the ending. I can see why this novella was nominated for a Nebula Award. It is a well-written, thought-provoking story. I recommend it. Thanks to the publisher for making it available as an ebook.

A good story and a quick read. The story ended sooner than I would have liked. The author could have extended the story by telling more of what life was like in the new world and put in more about the personal lives of the girls. The ending is what gives the story its' title.

I wish this story would have gone somewhere. The ending was abrupt and very disappointing.

I found this to be an interesting short story. Almost like an adult fairytale.

I did not care for this book at all. The Rumplestiltskin-esque story line was annoying, and not one character in the book was very appealing. I'm not even crazy about the art on the front cover. Mercifully, at 43 pages it was short. I deleted it from my Nook library.

Short, but you just have to read it in one sitting. Kept me on the edge and couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen...not giving any spoilers!!! Just read it!
