Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maggie L. Schrock
Gavin is a young boy who hates riding the bus to school. He hates everything about it, right down to the color. Mostly though, he hates riding the bus because of Max. Max is mean to Gavin every day, tripping Gavin as he walks down the aisle and squishing him against the window. One blessed day, Max is absent and Gavin gets to ride the bus in peace. Max is absent the next day too, and Gavin discovers that Max had a bike accident and has to stay at home because of his injuries. Much to Gavin's surprise, the other students on the bus suggest he go visit Max, because Max says Gavin is his best friend. Gavin decides to take their advice and visits Max at home. After the visit, Max and Gavin do become best friends, and Gavin enjoys his daily bus ride. Meister's story teaches young kids about bullies, and that often they are just misunderstood and need a friend. One of the "My First Graphic Novel" series, this title is a great start to reading graphic novels. The author includes a "How to Read a Graphic Novel" page right in the beginning. There is also a glossary for young readers. Teachers can use the discussion questions and writing prompts in the back for instruction. Reviewer: Maggie L. Schrock
