Bushspeak: The Curious Wit & Wisdom of George W. Bush

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lydia Vanderloo
President George W. Bush may be just as well known for his widespread popularity as for his repeated verbal gaffs, and even his supporters would admit that the appeal of our 43rd president has never been his eloquence or intellectual depth. So perhaps it was almost too easy a task to assemble this short but potent collection of quotes uttered by Dubya -- but it sure makes for a good chuckle. Each of the five main tracks on Bushspeak lines up a string of theme-related howlers, organized in themes and set to patriotic instrumental music such as "America the Beautiful" and "The National Anthem." Most obvious among the quotes are word fumbles such as "We'll make American...

Each of the five main tracks on Bushspeak lines up a string of theme-related howlers, organized in themes and set to patriotic instrumental music such as "America the Beautiful" and "The National Anthem." Most obvious among the quotes are word fumbles such as "We'll make American what we want it to be: a literate country and a hopefuler country" and "We cannot let terrorists and rogue nations hold this nation hostile or hold our allies hostile." The Harvard M.B.A. reveals his distinctive economic and social vision with snippets such as "We need an energy bill that encourages consumption," and "As I told a lot of folks from Texas over the years, I wish I knew the law." But the real fun comes when the Pres really lets personality shine on head-scratchers like "I couldn't imagine someone like Osama bin Laden understanding the joy of Hanukkah," and "I know that human beings and fish can coexist peacefully." Finally, for those worried that the wealthy Republican cares only for his own kind, he asserts, "First let me make it very clear: Poor people aren't necessarily killers." Political pundits of all stripes will find innumerable laughs here, and for those wishing to splice Bushisms into their own mixes, the final track collects all the quotes without the flag-waving background music.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Every president is subjected to the inevitable comedy record -- memorably, Stiff Records released The Wit & Wisdom of Ronald Reagan, which was blank on both sides -- and Shout Factory! has given listeners the first George W. Bush comedy record in Bushspeak: The Curious Wit & Wisdom of George W. Bush. Unlike the John F. Kennedy comedy records, which were sketches performed by comedians, Shout Factory! turns the floor over to Dubya himself, chronicling his most notorious verbal fumbles as a presidential candidate and as president. Many of these are quite familiar, even notorious -- a term that certainly works for "I don't think we need to be subliminable" and "the literacy level of our children are appalling" -- and they're gathered together according to chapters: "Bushspeak on Terrorism," "Bushspeak on Education," "Bushspeak on the Environment," "Bushspeak on the Economy," "Bushspeak on Governance & Compassion." At first, the speech snippets are played with patriotic music in the background, with each chapter announced in a booming voice; in the afterword, the snippets are repeated without music or announcements. The total running time for the main album and afterword is 18:14, which is kind of brief, but you can only take so much of this at once, and it's good that it makes its point and gets out of the way. It winds up being a good value for the dollar, something that works well to simultaneously amuse and rile the "Anyone But Bush" legions in 2004. After all, these start out being really funny -- "As I told a lot of folks in Texas over the years, I wish I knew the law"; "I couldn't imagine someone like Osama Bin Laden understanding the joy of Hanukkah"; "We're fully committed to working with both sides to bring the level of terror down to an acceptable level for both"; "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully" -- but after all these stumbles and gaffes, the following has a chilling impact. First, W revels in this memory: "One of the reporters said would you ever deficit spend and I said only, only in times of war, in times of economic insecurity as a result of a recession or in times of emergency. Never did I dream we'd have a trifecta." He follows this joke at the expense of our nation's dark days with a trademark snigger. Then, a little bit later, he has what seems to be a Freudian slip: "If this were a dictatorship it'd be a heck of a lot easier. [Snigger] Just so long as I'm the dictator." These statements bring a serious undercurrent to the humor that surrounds them and makes Bushspeak an effective political tool as well as a strong comedy album.

    Better than political satire.

This little collection of "Bushisms" would certainly have the President laughing at himself. Though I've bought and loved many of the Capitol Steps' CD's, I find this Shout Factory production much more enjoyable because George's words are given here with no side comments from the producer, except for the title of the recording and general themes. I have to admit, though, that I found the Outro unnecessary and redundant, and would have criticized it if I Hadn't first read B&N's editorial review. I also understand that for the small price of the disc, one couldn't have expected a lot of tracks to fill up anything like an hour-long CD. Still, I would like to have seen more selections, as the recording finished just as I was getting into laugh mode. Despite these minor criticisms, I still find this CD the best kind of political satire, since the subject, albeit unwittingly, provides all the laughter himself.
