BN.com Gift Guide

Business and Industry

Overview

This reference is geared for middle school students; older students could use the material, but the slimness of the volumes (each about 144 pages) and the layout of the pages speak to a younger audience. Ten of the 11 volumes each contain about 35 articles; the last volume contains a thematically organized bibliography and a separate section of web resources, as well as general statistical information and some excerpts of important laws described in the entries. Entries fall into nine categories: operations and ...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Commerce goes on all around us daily. Business endeavors take various forms, and each of them involves the hopes and dreams of many people. In Business and Industry writers look at the multi-faceted world of commercialism. This eleven-volume set addresses a host of issues. They touch upon a host of subjects inclusive of economists, economic philosophers, corporations, concepts of finance, and many other related topics. Each comprehensive essay is for a junior or senior high school student. The writers are fair in their presentations. For example, Marxism, socialism, and more other leftist economic schemas are presented in a balanced manner. Likewise, some of the leading businesses are criticized for their records on environmental, wage, and outsourcing issues. Additionally, this reference set addresses a wide range of questions in a fashion that will catch the literary eye of its readers. Readers will learn about the origins of Communism and of labor unions and about what the stock market represents. The illustrations and sidebar selections augment the solid writing in these books. Schools or libraries wishing to expand their reference materials to address issues germane to business should consider this series. 2004, Marshall Cavendish, Ages 12 up.

Gr 10 Up-Spanning topics ranging from economic terminology ("Opportunity Cost") to specific company histories (Ben & Jerry's), this alphabetical encyclopedia will help students learn about capitalism (and other systems) primarily in its modern, applied forms. Most entries are clearly written using lively language and realistic (though fictional) examples. The general tone is objective, though some of the essays (e.g., "Labor Market") present oversimplified examples. Many of the company histories and biographies lack any critical edge. However, in some important areas like tort reform, the articles not only explain the issues clearly but also present opposing arguments. The entries achieve a good balance between the brevity needed to maintain student attention and the depth needed to cover the topic. The final volume includes an extensive bibliography, Webliography, and list of resources in visual arts and literature, as well as statistical tables, texts of legal documents, and a number of indexes. The well-chosen, full-color illustrations are generally informative. However, the extremely simplistic time lines add little. In comparison, neither Burton S. Kaliski's Encyclopedia of Busine$$ and Finance (Macmillan, 1999) nor Jane Malonis's Encyclopedia of Business (Gale, 1999) provides information on specific companies or much on individual entrepreneurs, and their discussions of key topics are more scholarly. Business and Industry will serve both public and school libraries.-Jonathan Betz-Zall, City University Library, Everett, WA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
