Busoni's German libretto and beautifully dark orchestration are highlighted in this splendid recording of a 1959 BBC broadcast of the London Philharmonic under Adrian Boult's baton. All the voices are superbly cast and sung with bravado. An excellent addition for the more obscure opera seeker's collection. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This release offers a gripping account of Busoni¿s opera from a 1959 BBC broadcast of the shortened and accessible version of the unfinished score which was made by Sir Adrian Boult and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Fischer-Dieskau is at the height of powers and Paul Lewis is a chilling and effective Mephistopheles. The score seems to suit Boult¿s sensibilities and he expertly leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra through this difficult Modernist score. One unfortunate drawback on the part of the London Philharmonic¿s label is the absence of a libretto; I doubt the addition of a few more pages would have broken the bank. That said, this is an important release of an under-recorded work. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
