Overview

When Buster comes to live at Roger’s house, he has much to learn about the world at large.
Thank goodness Phoebe is there to teach him. She will instruct him about puppy bones, about smart bones and marked bones. And bones that mysteriously disappear. But all on his own Buster will learn something much more important.
With lively and spontaneous drawings, this chapter book for beginning readers shows how a goodhearted and generous dog discovers one of the riches of life—beyond bones.

A clever dog named Phoebe teaches the new puppy, Buster, the value of bones and how to train them to "stay" so that they do not disappear when he leaves the room.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“The author/illustrator of Buster: The Very Shy Dog exhibits her winning humor in this beginning chapter book. The comic watercolor–and–ink drawings tell a story of their own, with expressions and poses that are guaranteed to entertain.” School Library Journal

"...ink and watercolor illustrations are plentiful and engagingly varied in size to give each turn of the page a fresh start." Horn Book

Publishers Weekly
The title character of Buster: The Very Shy Dog returns in Buster & Phoebe: The Great Bone Game by Lisze Bechtold, geared to those just starting to read on their own. Phoebe, an adult dog, teaches Buster all about dog bones-about collecting them, marking them and even training them. Although Buster is just a puppy, he learns a much more important lesson on his own-about friendship. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Three intersecting short stories for beginning readers show the shifting balance of power between Phoebe, a masterful conniver and manipulator, and Buster, a naive and good-hearted puppy, in the all-important matter of bones. In the first story, Phoebe snatches Buster's bones by distracting him away from them, and then convinces him that his bones ran off only because they were not "well trained." As Buster tries to teach his bones to "stay," many a bone fails to obey. In the second story, Phoebe's insistence that she can recognize contested bones as hers, because they bear her special teeth marks, ends up working against her when Buster develops special teeth marks of his own. In the final story, Phoebe lusts after the enormous bone belonging to the neighbor dog, Gregory. She is ultimately foiled in her nefarious attempt to separate Gregory from his bone, but along the way Buster and Gregory become friends, so that when Phoebe issues her closing boast to Buster, "I still have more bones than you," Buster can reply, "That's okay. I have a new friend." The humor throughout, in both text and art, is smart and sophisticated, with emerging readers trusted to figure out for themselves exactly why Phoebe has so many more bones at every point than Buster. Both scheming Phoebe and sweet Buster are lovable characters, with Phoebe's sly glances and Buster's wide-eyed surprise perfectly rendered in each illustration. This is pure, light-hearted delight from start to finish. 2003, Houghton Mifflin, Ages 6 to 9.

School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-The author/illustrator of Buster: The Very Shy Dog (Houghton, 1999) exhibits her winning humor in this beginning chapter book. Buster, a black-coated puppy, has recently moved into Roger's house. Curly-eared Phoebe maintains her "first dog" status by taking advantage of the younger pooch's gullible nature and finding a way to make her pile of chewing bones grow as his diminishes. In the second chapter, a full-grown Buster finally manages to beat Phoebe at her own game. In the third story, Buster's loyalty and credulity keep Phoebe from trouble with fierce "Grrrrregorrrrry" when she tries to steal his bone. The three short installments make the adventures easy to digest for newcomers to the chapter-book realm. The comic watercolor-and-ink drawings tell a story of their own, with expressions and poses that are guaranteed to entertain.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
