School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1 Here's an alphabet book with some interesting possibilities. Each letter is used as the initial consonant of a gerund. ``Marching'' and ``munching,'' for instance, are demonstrated by a high- stepping child and a candy-covered tot. Illustrations show the Hawkins' trade mark: children with round faces and beady eyes performing the action. Car toon-style dialogue balloons add depth; a tiptoeing girl says ``Shush!'' as her doll says, ``Zzzzz.'' While younger children will enjoy sharing this book with an older child or an adult, it is not a beginner's ABC. The letters and words are lower case, and non-reading children will need some help identifying the activities. However, early readers will be able to decipher many of the words with the help of the pictures; much of the dialogue is also accessible. The illustrations, done in soft pastels, are humorous, and chil dren will readily relate to the activities. Busy ABC , more of an easy reader than a book for letter identification, will fill a niche in alphabet book collections. Lucy Young Clem, Evansville Vander burgh County Public Library, Ind.
