Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The two cubs on the cover are set against a background of bare twigs and snow. They look sweet, but that one bear's claw indicates that bears have some sharp defenses. Opening the book presents a different season and a trio of bears high up in a tree. Each page features one or more cubs in a variety of activities—running, chewing on a tree branch, hiding under mother bear, or riding on her back. These cubs also cuddle and snuggle, sniff, lift, wade in the water, and take snoozes. These animals and humans share behaviors, although some attribution such as waving and singing are probably not like those of their human relatives. The variety of bears is interesting and it would have been helpful to have a note indicating which are brown, black, grizzly, panda, or polar bears for those who may not know.
