Children's LiteratureOne of 6 books in the "Adventure in Literacy" series, this title aimed to provide ideas for all kinds of nonfiction writing for children ages 4 to 6 years old. The oversized book features a predominance of colorful, cartoon-like illustrations and minimal text to interest younger children. The book begins with a full-page explanation of the book's design and goal of helping young children with their initial attempts at nonfiction writing. Seven types of nonfiction writing are included: labeling, lists, instructions, reports, questions, charts and accounts. Plenty of examples are given for each type of nonfiction writing as well as lists of useful words so that children can copy the words and phrases they want adding their own details. Younger students or students who do not read will need adult assistance. Becoming familiar with types of writing and their uses seems appropriate; however, pressuring younger children who are not developmentally ready for these activities is not a good idea. For those students who are interested, this format of copying types of writing is a good first step. A foldout list of vocabulary words—in addition to those on specific pages—is included as well as a list of additional writing ideas and reminders about punctuation. 2005, Chrysalis Education, Ages 4 to 6.
