Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Written as part of a "Brand New Readers" series, these four booklets are as cute as they are effective. All of the four stories, "Dinah's Walk," "The Pretty Rock," "Good Night Dinah," and "Muddy Dinosaurs" are easy to read, brightly and thoughtfully illustrated and will hold the interest of young readers. Children will enjoy reading about Dinah as she tromps in the mud with her dinosaur friend, Doug, goes on an adventurous walk, discovers what she thinks is an interesting rock and finally goes home to her bed, exhausted from her busy day. The author even offers helpful hints to parents to help make reading a fun and rewarding experience. These books should make any child want to learn to read. 2000, Candlewick Press, $10.99 and $4.99. Ages 4 to 7. Reviewer: Emily Cook

PreS-Gr 1-These three books each include four stories, accompanied by bright illustrations done in watercolors, pastels, and ink. Each page has one short, simple sentence that directly correlates to the large, uncluttered picture. Worm cleverly turns a leaky ceiling into an advantage; turns himself into a circle, a square, and a triangle; experiences a variety of smells; and paints a picture. Silly Ruby, a sheep, plays in the wrong places, eats all of the grain, makes too much noise, and gets buried in a mound of apples. Dinah Dinosaur meets a scary monster, sits on a rock that isn't a rock, and gets muddy with a friend before going to bed. Repetition and endearing protagonists will make these titles appealing to the earliest readers. Tips to aid parents in helping their new readers are included.-Christina F.
