Overview

When a little boy's mother tells him "no!," the sassy and determined youngster balks. "But I want to!" he declares. And if I want to, I will!" What follows is every child's dream of mischief and mayhem. The hero sends his mother off to the moon in a rocket, gorges himself on sweets, and jumps on his bed until it breaks. But even this most energetic mischief-maker grows tired eventually, and when he does, we wants his mother back to read him a bedtime story and kiss him good night. John A. Rowe's comical, cartoonlike illustrations capture the gleeful abandon of a rebellious and imaginative youngster's wild dream of freedom.

When his mother says "No!," a young boy thinks of all the wonderful things he could do if he sent her to the moon, but then he realizes he wants her around, especially to read bedtime stories.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
When Mother says "no" one too many times, a little boy crafts a fanciful plan to send her to the moon. While she is away, all havoc breaks loose: loud music, painting on the walls, and burping contests. But when all is said and done, even mischievous boys need a goodnight story from their moms. And that is exactly what our little boy gets. If you're not offended by the, ahem, cheeky depictions of little boys' bottoms, you will find the illustrations in this raucous picture book to be laugh-out-loud funny. 2002, North-South Books,

K-Gr 3-When a little boy's mother says "NO" one time too many, he imagines sending her off to the moon. He dreams of a day filled with fun and mischief: finger painting on white walls, making faces at the lady next door, jumping on the bed as high as possible, and going to sleep without washing his face or brushing his teeth. He and his friends "will drink as much cola as we want and see who can burp loudest." In the end, he imagines her back, with the offer, "-if I ever send you off to the moon again, you won't have to fly alone, because I want to come, too. Yes, I want to!" Rowe's wacky pictures are in the same vein as work by Tony Ross and Babette Cole. However, while it may be in keeping with a child's logic, it is confusing that the boy's fantasy includes his mother reading him "a very, very long story" before she returns from exile. Kids may not understand that once he thinks of his mother being there, he wants her to come back after all. Brilliant!

This book is fantastic! My son really enjoys it and yes, he wants me to read it over and over each time. He relates to each mischief and also compares himself to the character.
