Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
All books from the "Really Weird Animal" series focus on the bizarre, weird, and unbelievable. This makes them appeal to readers looking for unique books. Over 50 bright, close-up photos appear in this particular book about flying creatures that begin life as caterpillars. The processes of growing, molting, becoming a pupa, and then an adult are shown. Readers learn that Monarch butterflies migrate as far as 3,000 miles per year; that the caterpillar, which becomes a Regal Moth, is nicknamed the hickory horned devil; and that all moths have leg spurs that look like tiny spikes. Information is offered in short text sections that are enclosed in round or oval-shaped bubbles and it is written at a fourth grade level. Extra facts about the moths and butterflies are found in text boxes called "Weird or What?" The format allows readers to pick and choose information for reports or just to enjoy the text. End material consists of a large glossary, an index, and resources for further exploration. This book makes an excellent supplement to science lessons. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
