Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Aspiring lepidopterists can learn how, when, where and why butterflies take flight in flowery prose ("Butterflies paint/ A palette so bright:/ A gift to the world,/ A symphonic flight./ That's why butterflies fly") on the pages of Butterflies Fly by Yvonne Winer, illus. by Karen Lloyd-Jones. What the text lacks in specificity the illustrations more than compensate for: from the well-known Monarch butterfly to the Indian Leaf that hails from Southern East Asia, each delicate pair of wings is pictured in its habitat. These glorious paintings and a closing identification guide will lead readers off to the closest butterfly exhibit. ( Feb.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
The sight of a butterfly in the air or perched on a brightly colored flower captures the eye. In this collection of fanciful poems, the eye is also drawn to the fabulous illustration of beautiful butterflies from around the world. The five lines of verse follow a patternÂūthey tell us how, when, where and why butterflies fly. The message is to heighten awareness that butterfly habitats are endangered and so are these glorious creatures. The final verse notes "Butterflies paint/A palette so bright:/A gift to the world. /A symphonic flight. /That's why butterflies fly." Factual information (common and scientific name, size, range, coloration and diet) about the butterflies is presented in the last spread along with full-color illustrations and in the order that they appear in the book. 2001, Charlesbridge, . Ages 6 up. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

Gr 3-5-As in their Spiders Spin Webs (Charlesbridge, 1998), Winer and Lloyd-Jones combine light verses with visually gorgeous paintings. Each picture features one of 15 types of butterflies in its natural environment. Unfortunately, the verses, all concluding with a variation of the refrain "That's how butterflies fly," are not as illuminating as the realistic artwork. Lines like "Butterflies glide/By meandering streams,/Reflecting the world/In colorful dreams./That's how butterflies fly" do little to express the wonder of the creatures. The book concludes with an identification guide to the featured butterflies and a list of recommended reading and Web sites. Field guides like Paul Opler's Peterson First Guide to Butterflies and Moths (Houghton, 1994; o.p.) or the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Butterflies (Knopf, 1981; o.p.) offer better insect science. Douglas Florian's Insectlopedia (Harcourt, 1998) and Paul Fleischman's Joyful Noise (HarperCollins, 1988) offer better insect poetry.-Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
In a set of large, lavishly detailed, full-bleed watercolors, Lloyd-Jones captures the intricate beauty of more than 15 species of butterflies from around the world. On the opposite page and with equal lyricism, Winer deftly stirs together natural history and an appreciation of their colors and movement through the seasons:"Butterflies frolic / In the brisk autumn breeze, / Mingling with colors / That fall from the trees. / That's when butterflies fly." Above each poem the butterfly being featured is singled out for a closer look, helping readers to spot them in the sometimes-camouflaged scene opposite. A key at the back identifies each butterfly by common and scientific name, notes whether or not it's endangered, and describes its range and habitat. Children who want to know more will find helpful lists of books and Web sites to consult. It's another lovely close-up look at nature from the creators of Spiders Spin Webs (1998).
