Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A wide variety of butterflies and moths come to life in three dimensions in six double-page spreads. A wealth of textual information is included on various aspects of their lives, including the Life Cycle, featuring the birth of a butterfly from a cocoon at the pull of a tab, Behavior, Defense, and the diversity of these "most colorful creatures on earth." This companion book to Beetles offers Sabuda a chance for more flamboyance as he creates bursts of butterflies, several together forming a delicate projectile lifting off the opening page. Several tabs make wings flap. The visual impact is strong and involving for the reader, who will still have to search out the information since there is no index. Boxed with the book is a stunning paper sculptured butterfly, a New Guinea Birdwing Ornithoptera chimaera, "mounted" inside a labeled 5" x 7" frame which can be hung on a wall. 2001, Hyperion Books for Children,

This is a fabulously funny book with factual information about butterflies. All sorts of butterflies with reflective foil and felt soft wings feature in these six spreads that come with a paper butterfly in a box for bug collectors who don't want any bugs to be harmed in the making of the book (it says so on the box). A cocoon opens and a hawkmoth caterpillar rears up in mock-attack. Anyone who likes bugs, pop-ups, science, or a good laugh ought to have this book on the shelf at home.
