Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
This title, part of the "Animal Life Cycle" series, takes young readers through the life cycle of a butterfly. This twenty-four page book is divided into five short chapters plus back matter. Each spread features very brief text and detailed, and sometimes labeled, full-color photographs. The book begins by showing the life cycle of a butterfly in four photographs. It then proceeds through the cycle: egg, caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly. A simple timeline of the stages of the cycle runs across the bottom of the pages. Back matter includes an illustrated glossary and a sequencing activity for readers. There is also a teacher and parent guide page, a short list of web sites for further information, and a simple index. The facts are given in bite-sized portions that include scientific terms. There are a few fun facts included, such as that the butterfly eats but does not grow bigger. The book will most likely appeal to young report writers and animal lovers and is a worthwhile addition to a collection of animal books. This title supports the Common Core State Standards in reading informational texts. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
