Buxtehude: Suites in G minor & E minor; More Palatino; Courant Zimble

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Manheim
With new recordings and reissues, the Naxos label continues to explore the vast output of Dietrich Buxtehude, the Danish-born German composer the young Bach walked a few hundred kilometers to hear. This is the second disc of Buxtehude harpsichord music from Danish keyboardist Lars Ulrik Mortensen, originally recorded for Dacapo in 1998. It's a rather motley group, not uniformly compelling but with flashes of Buxtehude's iconoclastic brilliance. The "More Palatino" and "Courant Zimble" cryptically referred to on the cover are variation sets. The former has a rather scholastic feel despite what is said to be a drinking-song theme, but the courant set whoever or whatever Zimble may have been is a nifty group of eight variations there is not a track designated as the theme, although the first one has the characteristic courant rhythm that are each rhythmically uniform, giving the impression of viewing the basic material through different lenses. The two suites, in G minor and E minor, have an unusual structure, with the opening allemandes dwarfing and dominating the other movements. Various short contrapuntal pieces are included, with both the old-fashioned multi-sectional canzona and the newer fugue represented, but the most intriguing is the little "Canzonetta in G major, BuxWV 171," with its quirky double notes. The chorale setting "Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, BuxWV 215," was probably written for organ but has no pedal part; Mortensen's inclusion of it is both defensible the music on this disc, performed at Buxtehude's Lübeck church Abendmusiken, occupied a semi-religious space and musically convincing. The next step for those who've heard Buxtehude's organ masterpieces remains his passionately inward vocal cantatas, not these harpsichord works, but those bitten by the Buxtehude bug will find the program worth their while. Dacapo's sound was unusually pleasant.
