Are you truly by God's grace? Or have you grown accustomed to it? Yes, we sing of God's “Amazing Grace,“ but do you truly understand what you as a Christian have experienced in receiving the grace of God? Or do you take divine grace for granted?

In By Grace Alone: How the Grace of God Amazes Me, Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson laments that “we have lost the joy and energy that is experienced when grace seems truly 'amazing.'” In an effort to restore the wonder of divine grace, he reflects on it from seven angels, each built around a stanza from a rich but little-known hymn, “O How the Grace of God Amazes Me,” written by Emmanuel T. Sibomana (ca.1915-1975),a pastor in the Africa nation of Burundi.

This book poses probing questions for today's believer: “If I am not amazed by God's grace, can I really be living in it? Can I really be tasting, and savoring, and delighting in it?” But those willing to delve into God's Word with Dr. Ferguson will come away with a deeper astonishment at the depth of Gods's grace.

From the Publisher

Rich in biblical exposition and in theological depth, By Grace Alone is a series of great messages by one of today's greatest preachers on some of the greatest Scripture texts- all on one of the greatest themes of the Bible: amazing grace! This book will excite your mind, stir your affection, convict your soul, win your heart, and move you into action. It will evangelize, disciple and mature all kinds of readers. Dr. Ferguson has given us another feast, and there is food here for all-saved and unsaved, ministers and laypeople, young and old. --Dr. Joel R. Beeke President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary Grand Rapids, MichiganMost of us have books lying on a table or a bookshelf somewhere, waiting for us to get around to reading them. Please don't let this book be in that category. Sinclair Ferguson is one of the clearest, brightest lights in evangelical Christianity today. This book will point you to the freedom and exuberance of living in the grace of God through Jesus Christ. Read this book for your own encouragement, and pass it along to a new disciple or an (as yet) unbelieving neighbor. --Russell D. Moore: Dean, School of Theology Vice president for academic administration The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Louisville, Kentucky.Sinclair Ferguson's biblically insightful and pastorally profound meditations on the manifold grace of God are strung like pearls on the stanzas of the African hymn 'O How the Grace of God Amazes Me.' Christ is at the very center, as He must be: in Him, our enslaved hearts find freedom, our guilty hearts find forgiveness, our troubled hearts find a Defender in the darkness, and our embattled hearts find strength to resist the enemy's enticements. Thirsty hearts, come to Jesus and drink deeply from His fountain of amazing, life-giving, joy-imparting, hope-sustaining grace. --Dennis E. Johnson Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Seminary California Escondido, California

    Be amazed and astounded!

When you hear or sing "Amazing Grace", is God's grace still amazing to you? If you've been a Christian for a long time, you might be able to relate more to the concept of "accustomed grace" instead of "amazing grace". Whether God's grace is amazing to you or not, Sinclair Ferguson's By Grace Alone will enhance your understanding of grace and restore your awe of Him.

The author explains that the litmus test of the vitality of your spiritual growth is your ability to grasp the Gospel of Christ and His grace. Two signs that your faith is not healthy are 1) You are not happy by seeing the grace of God touch lives of the needy; 2) You feel no special need for forgiveness for yourself. The purpose of the book is to remind the reader how the grace of God astounds and amazes.

Through the hymn "O How the Grace of God Amazes Me," by Emmuel T. Sibomana, the author expounds on the major themes to open up the meaning of grace. First we have to realize we are in chains. "What is it that you cannot master, but masters you?" Charles Wesley lived an outwardly moral life of goodness and service - his chains were not visible. For others of us, they are. When we realize our bondage, that any chains make us all equally prisoners, even in the many ways God shows this to us, there is only one single remedy - Jesus set us free by being lifted up on the cross, publicly shamed, cruelly suffered, died so that we could be released from sins and dominion.

Satan is unable to destroy us, but He does seek to destroy our enjoyment of God and our understanding of grace. He throws his fiery darts of accusations, and they can be so sneaky that we may think the thoughts are our own, and thus condemning ourselves for even having such thoughts. Because of our ongoing sinfulness, we listen.

We must keep our eyes on the cross and remember that if He was so prepared to bear judgment and suffer for our sin, that he will not withhold good things from us or keep Him from fulfilling His loving purpose for us.

This thought-provoking yet easy-to-read book added a new dimension to my faith and has a permanent spot on my book shelf for re-reading. I highly recommend it. I received this book free from Reformation Trust in exchange for a review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
