Meet the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder

Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in 1867 in the log cabin described in Little House in the Big Woods. She and her family traveled by covered wagon across the Midwest. Later, Laura and her husband, Almanzo Wilder, made their own covered-wagon trip with their daughter, Rose, to Mansfield, Missouri. There, believing in the importance of knowing where you began in order to appreciate how far you've come, Laura wrote about her childhood growing up on the American frontier. For millions of readers Laura lives on forever as the little pioneer girl in the beloved Little House books.

Garth Williams began his work on the pictures for the Little House books by meeting Laura Ingalls Wilder at her home in Missouri, and then he traveled to the sites of all the little houses. His charming art caused Laura to remark that she and her family "live again in these illustrations."

    I Also Recommend:

    Fantastic family reading!

I read all the Little House books out loud each night to my 8 year old daughter and my husband. We all love them! My daughter loves Laura and her family and my husband and I are continually astounded at how self-reliant Pa and Ma are. I never thought my husband would enjoy these books, but it really has turned into a family event each night.

    I Also Recommend:

    Country Girls and Wolves

In 2010 we live in a world that revolves around technology. Children know all about the electronic devices available from tv, cell phones, to games. Yet, many have no clue that electronic games once did not exist and life was wonderful. Laura Ingalls Wilder captures the simple pleasures of life and all that nature offered to children in her book, By the Shores of Silver Lake. There was no danger running across a frozen lake, but when you come across a wolves' den, your chances of getting away rely on quick instinct. I totally recommend this book.

    Little House series

ALL of Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories are excellent, I would highly recommend to anyone!! And the color versions of the book are better quality books as far as the paper, doesn't tear as easily...And the color really enhances the stories for children.

    ok book

this was a pretty good book. my favorite part was when Laura and her family went on their very first train ride. I thought it was very sad how Laura's dog-Jack died.

    a reviewer

In the Shores of Silver Lake Laura sees a lot of railroad men. She learns how the men level the land so railroad tracks can be laid down. In the middle of this book people come and settle the land. Since people had no homes built yet they stayed in Laura's house and then moved on to going further west or settling around that area. I reccomend this book to people who want to learn about the wild west.
