Roland GreenThis brisk and readable fantasy had its origins as an online Prodigy network serial. (Costikyan is a potent figure in the world of fantasy role-playing games, computerized and in other media.) The story straightforwardly uses almost equally straightforward fantasy elements: a young barbarian, Mongoose, who is also the son of a god and his animal companion, Brother (a real mongoose), are launched on a peril-fraught quest requiring both brains and brawn. The writing is entirely satisfactory for the purposes of the story, and its light touch never slips into silliness. The tale's likely to find a large readership among the game-oriented, a respectable one among regular fantasy fans.
