Overview

In this secular age, it's difficult to explain the enormous success of John Tavener's expressly spiritual music. A devout member of the Russian Orthodox Church, the English composer draws on sacred traditions from East and West, blending the unaffected beauty of medieval chant and early polyphony with the ecstatic melodies of Byzantine music. BYZANTIA is essentially a collection of Tavener's greatest hits. "Song for Athene" is probably his most famous work; it was performed as the closing processional at Princess Diana's funeral, where its haunting atmosphere and exotic dissonances provided a balm for a nation's grief. Most of the pieces in this collection are choral, although the disc opens with a movement from "The Protecting Veil," a rapturously contemplative work for cello and string orchestra. If this excerpt -- exquisitely played by Steven Isserlis, the work's dedicatee -- leaves one wanting more, then BYZANTIA certainly has done its job.
